When I flew to my sister’s house last month, I had a super early flight out of town. The house was completely quiet and dark as I packed my bags and got ready to leave. I had three little bags of Skittles for the kids to find on the kitchen counter, but never got around to writing out a love note to each of them. At 5 in the morning, all I could manage was a quick “I love you” on three sheets of paper. The notes were exactly the same. The candy bags were exactly the same.
When I got back home, I found one of the three notes still floating around the house but it had been altered.
It now read, “I love you! You are my favorite by far”.
I was furious! I had been so careful about giving the kids the same exact treat and the same exact words of love.
I asked around, starting with Kaylee. She had never seen that note before. Grace doesn’t write well yet, so that meant it had to be Joshua, the oldest.
“Why in the world would you write something so hurtful on this note?” I confronted him.
“Oh! I wrote that for Grace. She was crying that she missed you, so I wrote that she was your favorite to make her feel better.” He was sincere, and I was completely baffled.
It was such a surprise, such a relief. The words I read with malicious intent were actually written in love.
Sometimes brothers are the absolute best.
