After watching a video on FaceBook about hugs being good for your health, Kaylee and I have been snuggling a lot more.
K: My friends only give me quick hugs, but I really want long hugs like this: she squeezes me
Me: Well, it’s important to be aware of people’s personal space, but you can always hug me as long as you want. And when you get married, you can hug your husband as long as you want too, just like Daddy hugs me.
K: When I get married, I am going to find a someone who:
1. Is ok that I want to adopt kids
2. Likes cats
3. Is nice
4. Likes long hugs.
Some of Kaylee’s art work was selected to be displayed at the mall!
“Be KIND or Be QUIET”
It seems the kids love when I say this, since they give me opportunities each day to repeat it. This saves so much time from my usual “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” In fact, I doubt I’ll ever use the longer version ever again.
At girl scouts, Kaylee was asked to draw a logo for a shop that she would like to open someday. She wants to be a vet and open a place called “The Pussy Cats: where you’ll purr with pleasure!”
Kaylee has been reading a book series called “Warriors” for the past few months. It is about cats who live in the wild as clans and deal with territory issues and other cat problems. There are dozens of books and a few graphic novels and she is plowing through them at an alarming rate. I asked her one day if any of her friends have read as many of the Warrior books, or if she is the Warrior expert.
“Oh no, mom! I think there are BILLIONS of people who are “Warriors” fans!” Kaylee, 9
“Those are NOT disposable socks!” I yelled at Joshua. His feet were super stinky, so I asked him to take off his socks. He took them off and tossed them in the trash can. He dug them back out, but makes me wonder how many socks have disappeared in that manner…..
“I wish my butt was as big as yours, mom.” Grace said wistfully one evening.
I just about choked with surprise. I stayed quiet, afraid I might spew forth a body shaming comment about myself.
“I love your butt. Maybe someday mine will look just like yours.”
I adore this innocent, sweet girl who is teaching me to love myself.
Also, I had Lasik surgery so now I can snuggle without my glasses getting in the way!
When the Sunday School teacher asked for prayer requests, Grace said
“Please pray for my mommy. She is tired because she stayed up until ONE IN THE MORNING talking with her friends.”
Grace could not believe that I stayed up so late and I couldn’t believe she asked people to pray for me. I hope her teacher was impressed because that is a very rare occurrence!
Joshua: “Is our cherry tree a yew tree?”
Me: A “U” tree?
Joshua: “No, a Y-E-W tree. Yew. You know, the death berry.”
Me: Uhhhh. I don’t know. Maybe? Don’t eat it please.
“I wish the piano ran on electricity too.” Joshua muttered during our power outage. Due to a bad windstorm, we lost power for two days. There wasn’t much to do around the house, but the piano worked just fine!
Another another example of fun without electricity: I told the girls to put on warm pj as the house became colder without heat. They added extra warmth by stuffing themselves with stuffed animals! Creative little people!
“The snow is starting to simmer down” Grace commented when as the snow started to melt. We got two feet of snow and two days off school. This was one week after we lost power and school was closed for two days. The kids thought they were so lucky!
Grace: Today Jayden said that he likes me.
Me: Well, I bet most of the kids in your class like you. You are a good friend. (I had to at least try to steer the conversation this way)
Grace: No mom. He LIKES me, likes me. (That’s what I thought…oh Lord help me. She’s only 7)
Me: Hmmmm. What do you think about that?
Grace: I told him thank you for being honest with me. And I only want to be friends.
Me: I think you handled that in a good way, honey. (why does she sound like a little adult at 7?)
At least she still plays with wooden blocks….
